Hyper-globalisation the all-encompassing desire to pursue low-cost supply chains and open markets is now a thing of the past. Today, the rules of the global game are very different, determined by national security strategies, industrial protectionism and geopolitical alignments. International trade is quickly realigning along political lines, according to recent structural evaluations. The transition from an efficient trade-centric to a security-centric network is driving a multi-polar, highly-fractured world in which economics and geopolitics have become inextricably linked.
Economic interdependence was once considered a promoter of peace in the world for decades. In 2026, that mutual dependence is increasingly being weaponized. States are systematically leveraging their market dominance, financial systems and regulatory authority in pursuit of strategic and political goals. This is particularly evident in the formation of competing economic blocs. Western countries are bolstering "friend-shoring" efforts, seeking to relocate key manufacturing capabilities to trusted partners in North America, Europe and parts of the Asia-Pacific to shield their domestic economies from external shocks. Meanwhile, China and its partners continue to strengthen regional trade ties and establish financial institutions parallel to the Western-dominated system.
This fragmentation has been starkly illustrated by recent legal and regulatory battles. Multinational corporations have had to abandon the one-source supply model in the face of high-stakes tariff disputes and unforeseen judicial interventions, including recent court decisions questioning the legal basis of broad unilateral tariffs. Businesses are no longer asking where they can obtain the cheapest goods; they are asking where they can source goods safely and reliably.
Central to this fragmentation is the uncompromising strategic competition between the United States and China. Despite high-level diplomatic engagements, structural disagreements particularly over advanced technology remain unresolved. Washington's restrictive technology export policies, combined with Beijing's own resource restrictions, have transformed global supply chains into increasingly complex and politically sensitive networks.
The European Union finds itself in a geopolitical "no man's land." While Europe has historically depended on open global markets, it is now pursuing a strategy of "de-risking" rather than complete economic decoupling from China. Simultaneously, the EU is introducing defensive trade measures, carbon border adjustment mechanisms, and significant funding for domestic green-technology manufacturing to reduce dependence on potentially hostile supply chains. However, European policymakers must constantly balance these security-driven policies against the risk of retaliatory trade wars that could undermine already fragile economic growth.
The frontline of today's geo-economic competition is no longer traditional commodities but advanced technology. Semiconductors, artificial intelligence (AI), and quantum computing have become the principal drivers of national power, shaping both economic competitiveness and military superiority. Current data illustrates a significant divergence in global trade performance. Trade in advanced technology components has expanded by nearly 40 percent, while traditional sectors such as fossil-fuel energy have stagnated or declined. This rapid growth has been driven by aggressive state-led industrial policies. Initiatives such as China's "AI Plus" strategy and targeted U.S. export restrictions are designed to achieve technological self-sufficiency while denying strategic competitors access to critical technologies.
As a result, technological sovereignty has become a central pillar of national policy. Governments are actively promoting domestic technology manufacturing, creating duplicated supply chains that may reduce global efficiency but satisfy national security priorities.
India has emerged as one of the leading swing states in this increasingly polarized international order, mastering what has become known as "multi-alignment." Rather than aligning exclusively with either the Western or Eastern bloc, New Delhi has sought to leverage geopolitical divisions to establish itself as an alternative global manufacturing hub. This balancing strategy operates along two complementary tracks. First, India has substantially deepened its critical technology partnerships with the United States and Europe, integrating shifting global supply chains into its domestic manufacturing base through initiatives such as the Production Linked Incentive (PLI) schemes. Second, India continues to secure affordable energy supplies and access to critical raw materials from a diverse range of partners, preserving strategic autonomy while reducing excessive dependence on any single bloc. By presenting itself as a dependable yet non-aligned industrial power, India has successfully converted external geopolitical pressures into domestic economic opportunities.
As the global economy transitions toward digital technologies and renewable energy, resource scarcity is becoming an increasingly decisive factor. Geopolitical competition now revolves around securing critical minerals such as lithium, cobalt, nickel, and rare earth elements. Nations are racing to establish parallel mining and processing capabilities, while Western countries are investing heavily in domestic production and resource partnerships across Africa and Latin America to reduce dependence on concentrated supply chains.
However, this race for strategic resources increasingly collides with mounting environmental constraints. Nearly four billion people currently experience severe water stress, making ecological limitations a major constraint on future geoeconomic expansion. Advanced manufacturing industries, particularly semiconductor production, require vast quantities of water, creating new sources of competition and conflict both within and between nations.
Financing these massive industrial transitions through extensive domestic subsidies and rapidly rising defense expenditures has imposed a significant fiscal burden on governments worldwide. Sovereign borrowing has reached unprecedented levels, pushing global public debt to approximately 235 percent of global GDP. Such elevated debt levels carry serious macroeconomic implications. Although the International Monetary Fund projects global economic growth of around 3.3 percent this year, sustained public borrowing risks crowding out private investment while maintaining elevated borrowing costs over the long term. Developing and emerging economies face particular vulnerability, as higher interest rates driven by major powers' fiscal expansion contribute to capital outflows and intensify debt-servicing pressures.
Risk assessment must therefore be fundamentally redefined within today's geoeconomic landscape. Nations must carefully balance strategic autonomy with economic stability through increasingly sophisticated diplomatic and economic strategies. Multinational corporations must adapt to a world where redundancy, diversified multi-shore supply chains, and political risk are no longer temporary adjustments but permanent features of international business. In this new era, the true measure of economic success is no longer simply how much a nation trades, but how securely it can trade.
